Randall is the Ministry Developer for Young adults and Youth in the Episcopal Church in Arkansas. He grew up in Oklahoma and began his youth ministry career in Kansas City at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church 12 years a go. He lives in Maumelle, a suburb of Little Rock with his wife, 5 year old daughter and one pug. You can reach him at rcurtis@episcopalarkansas.org or www.facebook.com/randallcurtis

Who serves this network? Ideally we would have 12 dioceses on the Network which would consist of one adult and one youth from each. We have a chair person and one at-large youth representative.

Purpose of Network’s Ministry: The coming together as a network to build communication between each diocese of the Province. This is a valuable network and is also a way to involve the youth on the Provincial level.

Ways Province VII can help with these goals: Be aware of the events that are being made available to the youth of the Province and to support and talk them up in your home parish and on the diocesan level.

Youth Gather in Little Rock

The Provincial Youth Advisory Council met in Little Rock Sept. 25-27 to reorganize and make plans for the coming year. While there, they also joined the Provincial Executive Council for dinner, followed by Eucharist at Christ Church.

One of the Youth Council's immediate goals is to create their own web site, which will be linked to this site but geared more to youth and maintained by members of the Council.

A highlight of the Council's time in Little Rock was a special lunch and tour of Heifer International, a non-profit organization whose goal is to help end world hunger and poverty through self-reliance and sustainability. Joining the Council for this part of the weekend were several youth groups from around Arkansas.

The Provincial Youth Council is composed of two representatives, one youth and one adult, from each diocese.

Youth and their adult leaders learned about the work of Heifer International through hands-on displays in the organization's education facility. Heifer Village, which includes this facility along with the international headquarters pictured above, was built on the site of an old railroad switching yard. In addition to converting this toxic landscape into a self-sustaining wetland, Heifer used green techniques in the design and construction of both buildings.

To familiarize the youth with all of the exhibits, Heifer Village staff sent them on a scavenger hunt. Team leaders were responsible for recording each group's answers to the questions on their list. Arkansas Bishop Larry Benfield (above right) joined the youth on several occasions during the weekend. Also pictured above is part of the Heifer Village landscape, illustrating their use of native and low-water use plants.
